BPL indicates whether persons were born in the United States, and, if not, the foreign country where they were born.

BPL was drawn from the final CPS interview, conducted 2-5 months before the ATUS interview. Birthplace was not updated during the ATUS interview.

Information on father's birthplace (FBPL) and mother's birthplace (MBPL) is also available.
