Codes and Frequencies
Description
HISPAN identifies and classifies persons of Hispanic/Spanish/Latino origin. Respondents were asked, "Are you Spanish, Hispanic, or Latino?" Information about country of origin was collected from those who answered "yes" to this initial question.
HISPAN was drawn from the final CPS interview, conducted 2-5 months before the ATUS interview.
Comparability
Information collected regarding Hispanic origin changed in January 2003 and January 2014.
A new Hispanic origin variable was introduced in January 2003. This version included less detail than the previous measure of Hispanic origin. For individuals who completed the final CPS interview in 2002, all of the detail of the earlier variable is preserved in the three-digit Hispanic origin codes.
Additional detail about central/south American Hispanic origin was introduced in January 2014.
Users who are concerned about comparability may want to recode HISPAN using either the first or first two digits of the variable.
