PED is a 4-digit numeric variable reported in minutes.
9999 = NIU (Not in Universe)
Description
PED reports the total amount of time during the diary day that the respondent spent in primary eating and drinking.
This variable is calculated by summing the amount of time the respondent spent in eating and drinking as a primary activity. The activities included in this calculation are 050202 (eating and drinking as part of job), 110101 (eating and drinking), 110199 (eating and drinking, n.e.c.), and 119999 (eating and drinking, n.e.c.).
Researchers can alternatively calculate the total amount of time in primary eating and drinking by creating a time use variable in the ATUS-X extract builder. Researchers may also want to use the secondary eating and drinking filter in the extract builder, or use the total amount of time in secondary eating (SED_EAT) or secondary drinking (SED_DRINK).
Total time in primary eating and drinking was calculated as part of the Eating and Health Module of the ATUS interview. Analyses that include PED should use EHWT as the weight.
