Description
RELATEWU reports the relationship of the individual with the respondent while the activity was performed to the respondent. Users should note that "who" information is not collected for all activities (see WHO_ASK).
RELATEWU is available only if you select a hierarchical extract. If you request a hierarchical extract and plan to construct time use variables in your statistics package, this variable may be useful to you. If you request a rectangular extract and plan to construct time use variables through the extract system, RELATEWU will not be included in your extract, as persons are the unit of observation for rectangular extracts rather than activity or who records.
Comparability
Beginning in 2010, there were two changes to RELATEW. First, ATUS respondents were able to provide more detail about their co-workers, colleagues, and clients. This category was broken out into four new categories in 2010: 1) boss or manager, 2) people whom I supervise, 3) co-workers, and 4) customers. Second, respondents were able to report who they were with while they were at work (ACTIVITY codes 050101-050199). This variable is the uncollapsed version of RELATEW, which is a version of this variable that has been harmonized for comparability.
