SCC_ALL_LN is a 4-digit numeric variable reported in minutes. Values for ATUS respondents range from 0 to 1440 minutes. Members of the dataset who are not ATUS respondents are assigned a value of 99999 = NIU (Not in universe).
Description
SCC_ALL_LN reports the amount of time during the associated activity that the respondent reported engaging in secondary childcare of any children under the age of 13.
Secondary childcare of household children is not recorded if the respondent's main activity is sleeping (0101xx), directly related to the care of household children (0301xx, 0302xx, 0303xx, 180301, 180302, 180303, or 180304), or if all household children are asleep. Secondary childcare of non-household children is not recorded if the respondent's main activity is sleeping (0101xx), directly related to the care of household children (0301xx, 0302xx, 0303xx, 180301, 180302, 180303, or 180304), or (except in 2003) directly related to the care of non-household children (0401xx, 0402xx, 0403xx, 180401, 180402, 180403, 180404). Waking and sleep times are not asked of non-household children.
For 2003, the value of this variable is the maximum of the values for SCC_HHNHHOWN_LN (household and own non-household children) and SCC_NOWNNHH_LN (non-own, non-household children). In 2004 and forward, the value for this variable is the maximum of the values for SCC_OWNHH_LN (own household children), SCC_NOWNHH_LN (non-own household children), SCC_OWNNHH_LN (own non-household children), and SCC_NOWNNHH_LN (non-own, non-household children).
For each respondent, all values of SCC_ALL_LN are summed to create SCC_ALL.
This variable is available via extracts that are hierarchical or rectangular (activity) (more info on extract formats). If you request a hierarchical extract and plan to construct time use variables in your statistics package, this variable may be useful to you. If you request a rectangular extract and plan to construct time use variables through the extract system, SCC_ALL_LN will not be included in your extract, as persons are the unit of observation for rectangular extracts rather than activity or who records.
Comparability
Users should be aware of comparability issues in the collection of secondary childcare information across categories of children and over time. See the following variable descriptions for more information regarding the 2003 data: SCC_HHNHHOWN_LN, SCC_NOWNNHH_LN (non-own, non-household children). See these for secondary childcare in 2004 and later: SCC_OWNHH_LN (own household children), SCC_NOWNHH_LN (non-own household children), SCC_OWNNHH_LN (own non-household children), and SCC_NOWNNHH_LN (non-own, non-household children).
