SCC_HHNHHOWN_LN is a 4-digit numeric variable reported in minutes. Values for ATUS respondents range from 0 to 1440 minutes. Members of the dataset who are not ATUS respondents are assigned a value of 99999 = NIU (Not in universe).
Description
SCC_HHNHHOWN_LN reports the number of minutes during the associated activity that the respondent reported engaging in secondary childcare of household and own, non-household children under the age of 13.
Secondary childcare of own, non-household children is not recorded if the respondent's main activity is sleeping (0101xx), directly related to the care of household children (0301xx, 0301xx, 0303xx, 180301, 180302, 180303, or 180304), or (except in 2003) directly related to the care of non-household children (0401xx, 0402xx, 0403xx, 180401, 180402, 180403, 180404). Secondary childcare of household children is also not recorded before the first child in the household wakes up (KIDWAKETIME) or after the first child in the household goes to sleep (KIDBEDTIME), though it may be recorded for part of the activity during which a child wakes or goes to bed. Wake and sleep times are not recorded for non-household children.
For each respondent, all values of SCC_HHNHHOWN_LN are summed to create SCC_HHNHHOWN.
This variable is available via extracts that are hierarchical or rectangular (activity) (more info on extract formats). If you request a hierarchical extract and plan to construct time use variables in your statistics package, this variable may be useful to you. If you request a rectangular extract and plan to construct time use variables through the extract system, SCC_HHNHHOWN_LN will not be included in your extract, as persons are the unit of observation for rectangular extracts rather than activity or who records.
Comparability
In 2003, secondary care for household and own, non-household children was collected together. Beginning in 2004, secondary care for own household, non-own household, and own non-household was collected separately. After 2003, this variable is constructed using the maximum of the values for SCC_OWNHH_LN (own household child), SCC_NOWNHH_LN (non-own household child), and SCC_OWNNHH_LN (own, non-household child).
In 2003, care of own, non-household children was not recorded if no household children were awake. Starting in 2004, household children did not need to be awake to record care of non-household children.
Also, in 2003, secondary care of own, non-household children might have been recorded if the respondent's main activity was care of non-household children. Starting in 2004, those activities could not have occurred simultaneously.
