Description
SPRACE reports the racial category of the respondent's spouse or unmarried partner. More than one race may be reported.
RACE was drawn from the final CPS interview, conducted 2-5 months before the ATUS interview. Spouse or unmarried partner race was not updated at the time of the ATUS interview. Therefore, respondents whose spouse or unmarried partner was not in the household at the time of the CPS interview have a value of 9998 for SPRACE because information on race is not available.
In addition, SPRACE is missing for spouses of ATUS respondents whose last CPS interview occurred in 2002. RACE values for these ATUS respondents were hand-imputed using information collected using the pre-2003 CPS race categories, which did not allow for more than one race to be reported. No imputation was done for ATUS non-respondents or for other members of respondents' households. Only ATUS interviews conducted between January 2003 and May 2003 are affected by this problem.
