Codes and Frequencies
Description
YRIMMIG reports the year in which a person born outside the United States "came to the U.S. to stay."
YRIMMIG was drawn from the final CPS interview, conducted 2-5 months before the ATUS interview.
Comparability
The specific years grouped together for the period after 2001 differ over time. For example, persons in the 2003 dataset could have reported immigrating between 2000 and 2001, while persons in the 2004 dataset could have reported immigrating between 2000 and 2001 or between 2002 and 2004. Comparability across the datasets can be achieved by combining data on recent immigrants into a single "after 2001" classification and using the codes provided for the period between 1950 and 2001.
Response categories change annually in the CPS. For example, immigration between 2002 and 2005 is grouped together for members of the 2006 ATUS dataset whose final CPS interview took place prior to January 2006. For members of the 2006 ATUS dataset whose final CPS interview took place during or after January 2006, years of immigration are separated into two categories: 2002-2003 and 2004-2006.
